World's expert on lemmings
Born: 18 September 1912 in Bristol, England
Dennis Chitty was born in England and came to Canada in 1930. After getting his B.A. from the University of Toronto in 1935, Chitty embarked on a six decade quest to determine why lemming populations rise and fall. Although he may never solve this mystery, Chitty has managed to thoroughly disprove the age-old theory that lemmings regularly commit suicide by jumping off cliffs.
The retired Professor of Zoology at the University of British Columbia has also written a book, entitled "Do Lemmings Commit Suicide? Beautiful Hypotheses and Ugly Facts".
Additional trivia:
Lemming populations peak about every four years and then decline almost to extinction.
